Cahokia Indian Mounds
Today, we went to Cahokia Indian Mounds. It's a conglomeration of 70+ mounds of various shapes and sizes. The most impressive one, Monk's Mound, is shown here:
We climbed a few (cough, cough) steps, my children calling encouragement to my mother and me as we went. A 40-pound weight loss recently helped me up, and only my legs felt weak and on the stairs only. I breathed a little heavily at the top, but my legs straightened right out and my breath came back to me quickly. This was a "research" trip for KitKat's project on the Adena culture, an early woodland society who also built mounds, although about 1000 years earlier and much less elaborate than the Cahoks. We learned plenty, and we did plenty of walking. The Visitor's Center is new; it's been about 14 years since I was there last, and the old center is gone.
So, here are the pictures. Please note the beautiful pics of KitKat and ManCub (who really tried to give me a good pic this time). Tiger's Eye refused to cooperate for the pictures, but, hey, I refuse to allow my image taken either.
^^This is what is may have looked like long ago.
